Cognitive Skills Therapy

Therapists can assist a person in learning the skills they need to interact with other people and in group settings. A person with AvPD often gets so encompassed by their fears, lack of confidence and self-image, and negative outlook that they will actually regress in social skills. Learning how to deal with certain situations, how to approach a new person, how to deal with rejection and humiliation, and over all reacquire the lost social skills is a very useful form of therapy. There is still the drawback of the patient believing they are being made fun of or thinking they are less than other people because of their inability to communicate and function with others. The therapist will have to be make sure the patient understands what they are being helped to overcome and how it is a change made not by inability or stupidity, but a change made out of fear. Cognitive therapy is not teaching someone who is of less intelligence or capability how to be social, but instead re-teaching someone how to overcome fears in certain situations in order to get through with the least amount of negative outcome.
